How to Achieve a Positive Mindset

Words.

In my job as a magazine editor, I use them every day.

On paper or on the computer screen, we can massage words over and over until we get them to read just right. And, most often, editing down what we’re trying to say simplifies the message and makes it more direct and meaningful.

Believe it or not, the words you use can also help you better achieve your business goals. And editing helps here, too!

For instance, are you just going to try to achieve your revenue goal or are you going to achieve it?

Unfortunately, while trying to complete a task or believing you can complete a task seems positive, those phrases in and of themselves actually carry quite a bit of doubt. For instance:

  • I believe I will reach my profit goals this year.
  • I think I can grow my business to the next level … if the season goes well.
  • I believe I can win that big client, but it depends who else is bidding the work.

These statements can leave you open to weakness. Believing shows you want to, but it carries with it the question of whether you really can or are really good enough. When one part of your plan throws you a curveball, which is inevitable, then belief can be quickly lost to negativity.

On the other hand, when you know something will happen, that is based on truth.

Think of some simple things you know that are facts. For instance, do you believe your delivery will arrive today or do you know the delivery will arrive today between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.? Which phrase makes you feel more relaxed? The more factual and direct statement instantly puts one’s mind at ease and eliminates any doubt.

Knowing something will happen keeps you in a positive state of mind.

Does it work? You won’t know until you try it out. Adopt the mindset of knowing you will achieve your business goals and prepare and plan accordingly. Be committed to the process; don’t doubt you’ll get there. This is a powerful step in the right direction.

You can. You will.
