County Commissioners in Collier County, Fla., have taken a step toward enacting restrictions on fertilizers as a way to cut down on nutrient pollution in waterways, and have adopted a law that would limit when, where and what kinds of fertilizers homeowners can put on their lawns.
The rules require no less than 50 percent slow-release nitrogen, prohibit phosphorus fertilizers in most cases, limit fertilizer to 4 pounds per square foot per year, require a 10-foot no-fertilizer buffer around waterways and prohibit all fertilizing in August and September.
