SEATTLE, Wash. -The Seattle City Council is considering a resolution to end the purchase and use of any neonicotinoid pesticides for any purpose on any city- owned or operated land. The proposed legislation states that the city will, instead, "seek to use only pollinator-friendly methods of weed and pest control," the Washington State Nursery & Landscape Association informed its members this past week.
The resolution is the subject of a public hearing Monday, Sept. 22. It also states that the city’s mayor and city council support a national moratorium on the sale and use of neonicotinoids, along with urging the U.S. EPA to suspend the registration of imidacloprid, clothianidin, thiamethoxam, dinotafuran and any other neonicotinoids until the EPA can complete its environmental assessments.
Furthermore, the resolution urges businesses operating within Seattle "to take immediate steps to ensure no plants, seeds or products containing neonictinoids are purchased, sold or used with city limits.
