IA Welcomes Markey


Kathleen Markey

The Irrigation Association has hired Kathleen Markey as marketing director. Markey has served as the director of association marketing at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and has also worked for United Way of America, American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Earle Palmer Brown agency. For the past several years, Markey has consulted as a strategic director for a marketing communications agency. She holds bachelor’s degrees in business and marketing from Virginia Tech.

PGMS Expands CEU Requirements

The Professional Grounds Management Society has expanded the continuing education requirement for its Certified Grounds Technician professional designation program. All certified CGTs need to obtain 35 continuing education units every five years. Upon recertifying, CGTs will need to submit proof of attendance in the following accreditation categories: classes taken; teaching or writing an article; involvement with the society; attendance at the School of Grounds Management and GIE+EXPO, a PGMS regional seminar and site visitation or PGMS branch meetings; and certifications such as the pesticide license or first aid certificate. New ARA Foundation Trustees

Charlie Neffle, who served as chair, and Dennis Von Ruden both completed their terms in office for the American Rental Association Foundation board of trustees. Each had served for three years, with Neffle in his leadership position for two. Doron Broadfoot took over as the new chair of the board. Catherine DeBusk is the new vice chair. Andy Cooke and Dave Garton joined the board as new trustees.

NRPA Launches Networking Platform

The National Recreation & Park Association launched NRPA Connect, the largest online networking platform for parks and recreation in the U.S. The platform, available at www.nrpaconnect.org, will connect members of the association through e-mail groups, forums, networks and blogs, providing a one-stop venue for sharing news and information, networking with colleagues and participating in industry-related discussions.

PLANET Issues Resolution Honoring PGMS

The Professional Landcare Network issued a resolution saluting the Professional Grounds Management Society on the celebration of its 100th anniversary in 2011. PGMS was originally founded in 1911 as the National Gardeners Association. PLANET noted that the society has become a leader in the green industry in advancing the important topic of landscape sustainability to its members so those professionals can use their expertise to help all of us improve the environment.
