Project EverGreen to Display BENCHES ArtWork

Project EverGreen is seeking participants for its BENCHES ArtWork exhibition at the GIE+EXPO. The organization’s goal is to have 20 benches and participating companies at the showcase. With a $1,000 donation, sponsors receive a mini-bench from Project EverGreen, which the company may paint, sculpt and otherwise adorn in any way to reflect the company and how it enhances green spaces.

ANLA Inducts Meyer into Hall of Fame, Elects Leaders

The American Nursery & Landscape Association inducted Carl Meyer, president of Horticultural Services, Inc., into its Hall of Fame. Established in 1966, the ANLA Hall of Fame Award is given to an outstanding nursery and landscape industry professional whose business and community accomplishments serve as an example for others in the industry. Meyer has served as president of ANLA and its Landscape Division. He has also served as president of the Western Nursery and Landscape Association.

Greg Schaan, president and CEO of Imperial Nurseries, assumed the presidency of ANLA during the annual meeting. He has served on the executive committee of the Horticultural Research Institute, the Horticultural Distribution Committee and as president of the New England Nursery Association.

Also at the annual meeting, ANLA elected new leaders to its board and divisions. Tom Courtright assumed the title of president-elect of ANLA’s board of directors. John Bryant and Stan Brown were newly seated on the board. Matt Sawyer will serve on the Landscape Distribution Division board. Steve Hutton and Peter Scarff joined the Grower Division board, while Scott Price and Kyle Natorp will serve on the Landscape Division board.

GCSAA Awards Royal Spanish Golf Federation Scholarships

Michigan State University students Manuel Ángel González Loma and José Antonio Martín Quirós have each won $10,000 scholarships from the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, funded by the Environmental Institute for Golf, the philanthropic organization of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. The scholarship is a two-year grant presented to individuals from Spain pursuing a turfgrass management degree at MSU. Winners are selected by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation and also receive an all-expense-paid trip to the 2009 GCSAA Education Conference and Golf Industry Show.

González Loma earned an agricultural technician engineering degree from the Universidad de Sevilla and a masters in golf club management from the Autonomous School of Business Management in Malaga, Spain. His work experience includes the Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande and the Centro Nacional de Golf. Martín Quirós attained his greenkeeper license from the Autonomous School of Business Management. He has worked at several golf courses in Spain, including Atalaya Golf, Valderrama and the Centro Nacional of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation.

IAEF Holds Faculty Academy

The Irrigation Association Education Foundation hosted the 2008 Faculty Academy in Denver, Colo. The session drew 35 instructors from around the country. The two-day academy provides intensive classroom and field instruction in irrigation concepts and best practices, and allows instructors to network with their peers. Highlights included training on sprinkler spacing, electrical troubleshooting and a hydraulics lab. Participants were treated to a tour of INVESCO Field and a green roof presentation and tour at an EPA facility in Denver. For more information, visit www.iaef.org.
