Valley Green to Distribute PlanTTech Fertilizers

Valley Green has been appointed as a master distributor for a new research-based fertilizer line called PlanTTech Organic Fertilizers. PlanTTech is a joint venture with fertilizer manufacturer Grigg Brothers. The fertilizers are designed with environmental considerations in mind, do not contain sewage sludge or manure and come in granular and liquid forms.

UGA Licenses New Bermudagrass

The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. licensed a new bermudagrass to New Concept Turf, a Georgia-based company. Wayne Hanna, a professor of plant breeding and genetics, developed TifGrand, which thrives in both sun and shade. New Concept contracted The Turfgrass Group, Fort Valley, Ga., to exclusively handle licensing of TifGrand for sod production.

Horvath Accepts Position at UT

Dr. Brandon J. Horvath accepted a faculty position in turfgrass science at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Previously, he was an assistant professor in Virginia Tech’s department of plant pathology, physiology and weed science. He joined UT’s turf team in 2006 and served as the lead turf pathologist.

Clean Scapes Converts to Propane

Landscaping company Clean Scapes, Austin, Texas, converted its gas-powered mowers to propane as part of its commitment to using green equipment. Propane mowers run on cleaner fuel, do not produce as many harmful emissions and decrease fuel costs.

Pettus has over 20 years of experience in technical support and service and holds five certifications for servicing diesel equipment from Pitt Community College in Greenville, N.C.

OSU Holds IPM Landscape Workshop

Oklahoma State University held its annual IPM Landscape Workshop at the Oklahoma Botanical Garden at the Stillwater campus. Dr. Mike Kenna, United States Golf Association, was a featured speaker on the topic of “The Future of Biocontrol for Lawn Maintenance.” Other speakers included Dr. Rick Grantham, “Hold It… Hold It… Now Say Cheese!”; Dr. Justin Moss, “Best Irrigation Water Management Practices for Landscape IPM Programs”; and Dr. Dave Engle, “Water and Your Livelihood.”

Georgia-Pacific Adds Distributors

Georgia-Pacific Plant Nutrition announced that three distributors in the southeastern United States have added Nitamin Steady-Delivery plant nutrition to their existing nitrogen product lines. Coastal AgroBusiness, Greenville, N.C., will distribute Nitamin products in the Carolinas and Virginia; Howard Fertilizer & Chemical Co., Orlando, Fla., will serve Florida; and Triangle Chemical Co., Macon, Ga., will cover Georgia and Florida markets.

Dawn Industries Acquires U-Tell System

Dawn Industries, Inc. has acquired U-Tell Sales’ IrriCap system. U-Tell, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, manufactures direct access caps for irrigation drain valves and wire splices. The company was started in 2005 by Travis Wilson.

NTEP Improves Data Accuracy, Refines Plans for Trials

The National Turfgrass Evaluation Program has instituted a new statistical procedure, AMMI (Additive Main Effect and Multiplicative Interaction), in its cultivar testing. AMMI was developed and tested by statisticians at the University of Massachusetts and Cornell University over the last 15 years. It was designed to more accurately analyze the way genotypes interact with different environments.

NTEP is continuing its plans to enhance its testing system by conducting Trait Specific Trials. The first of these are cool-season drought and traffic trials, to be established in fall 2009. The drought trial will be established at three locations in the Midwest or East and three locations in the West. The traffic trial, a cooperative effort between NTEP and the Sports Turf Managers Association, will be established at six to eight locations across the United States.

Sellick Marks 40th Anniversary

Sellick Equipment Ltd. celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2009. The company was started in 1969 when Walter Sellick, along with sons Howard and David, modified an industrial Ford tractor into a 6,000-pound forklift for outdoor use. Today, there are over 10,000 Sellick machines in the field, serviced by an extensive North American dealer network consisting of 230 locations.

Rogers Becomes GSA Schedule Contractor

Rogers Brothers Corp., Albion, Pa., was awarded a contract in the U.S. General Services Administration Schedules program. The GSA is a government agency whose purpose is to develop cost-minimizing policies and buyer’s contracts for all government agencies. Rogers will have three trailer models listed with GSA.

Kenworth Receives EPA Award

Kenworth Truck Co. was honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with a 2008 Clean Air Excellence award. The company received the award in the Clean Air Technology category in recognition of its T270 Class VI and T370 Class VII diesel-electric hybrids, T800 liquefied natural gas trucks and Kenworth Clean Power no-idle system.
