Spirit Implements Enters Supply Agreement

Spirit Implements, LLC, Waupaca, Wis., entered an exclusive supply agreement with McCormick International USA and Landini, McCormick Canada. Spirit will supply front-end loaders and other tractor attachments for the U.S. and Canadian market. Ryan R. Delaney founded the company in 1999 and is currently its president and sole owner.

Cotton Awarded Fourth U.S. Patent

Don Cotton was granted patent protection on an invention that improves the method used to sharpen reel-type mowers. Cotton, who also has three other patents, is president and owner of Turf Pride LLC, Andalusia, Ala.

The Groundskeeper Wins Subcontractor of the Year Award

The Cornerstone Building Foundation named The Groundskeeper its Subcontractor of the Year. The award is based on quality of craftsmanship, contributions to the community, consistency of service to clients, responsiveness to schedule and budget, emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, and longevity of the company. The Groundskeeper employs over 700 people in markets in Las Vegas, Nev.; Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz.; Albuquerque, N.M.; St. George, Utah; and Austin and San Antonio, Texas.

Farm Credit Returns Millions to Borrowers

Farm Credit of South Florida has returned millions of dollars back to its member-borrowers in the form of patronage refund checks during their 2009 annual stockholders’ meeting. Due to a successful year, the 93-year-old credit cooperative was able to share their success with member-borrowers by sharing the profits.

Since 1988, the agriculture credit association has distributed more than $84 million back to their borrower-members.

Also at the meeting, James Alderman, owner/operator of J. Alderman Farms operating in Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties, was elected to fill a vacant seat on the board, and Sherwood “Buddy” Johnson, a citrus grower in Indian River County, was re-elected to his seat to serve another three-year term.

Sarlo Opens New Location

Sarlo Power Mowers, Inc. opened a new retail and service center in Bonita Springs, Fla. Sarlo also operates a store in Naples, Fla., and a store and manufacturing plant in Fort Myers, Fla.

Thompson Moves to Larger Facility

Thompson Pump & Mfg. Co., Inc. moved its Panama City, Fla., branch operation to a larger facility. The office covers 49 counties across Florida, Alabama and Georgia. Jim Brown is the branch manager, and Daniel Raffield and Rick Waters handle sales.

Badger Meter Adds New Distributor

Badger Meter, Inc. expanded its sales distribution network with the addition of Innovative Metering Solutions, Inc., Odessa, Fla. Scott Cochrane and Steve Portlance, who previously served as Badger Meter sales director and account manager, respectively, will co-manage the new distributorship.

Thomson Receives SEE Award

Dr. John A. A. Thomson, originator of SUPERthrive, received the Lifetime Environmental Awareness Award from Sustainable Environmental Education, a nonprofit organization. Radio show host Nick Federoff presented the award at Thomson’s Vitamin Institute facilities in North Hollywood, Calif.

Herndon Receives FFA Scholarship

Cameron Herndon, Haines City, Fla., a member of the Haines City Senior FFA Chapter, won the State Turfgrass Management Proficiency. He was recognized at the 81st annual state FFA convention. Herndon, who works for Circle T Lawn Care, received a $250 check from John Deere, the national sponsor of the award. He will go on to compete against other state winners.

Pittillo Named N.C. Farmer of the Year

Fred W. Pittillo, Hendersonville, N.C., was selected as the 2009 North Carolina winner of the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year award, joining nine other state winners. The overall winner will be announced October 20 at the Sunbelt Ag Expo farm show in Moultrie, Ga. Pittillo operates Turf Mountain Sod, producing, delivering and installing sod for customers in an area from Raleigh, N.C., to Knoxville, Tenn., and from Atlanta, Ga., to Bristol, Va.
