Converted Organics Gets High Rating in Trials

Archer Daniels Midland conducted a turf trial on natural fertilizers typically used on commercial turf, such as urea. Tested against seven other competing natural fertilizers, Converted Organics 6-0-0 displayed the best overall and consistent quality over nearly two months of evaluation. Fermanian Consulting, LLC conducted the study.

Jain Launches Web Site Redesign

Jain Irrigation, Inc. announced the redesign of its Web site at www.jainsusa.com. The site incorporates a new look and feel, along with database-driven content. Features include company news, searchable products and specifications, detailed product information and images, technical information and a dealer list linked to Google maps. A login system allows dealers and end users to view additional site content and interactive features.

Signature Marks Anniversaries

Signature Control Systems, Inc. marked the first anniversary of its acquisition of Nelson Turf and the first anniversary of the Signature Turf Division. Signature traces its roots back to 1907 via several acquisitions, including the history of Nelson Turf, which dates its origins to 1911. The current company structure and ownership have been in place since 2000.

Talbert Names New Area Sales Managers

Talbert Mfg., Inc. hired Todd Galgoci as an area sales manager for the Great Lakes territory, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin, and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba, Nunavut and Ontario. Previously, he worked for East Mfg. Corp., and has also worked for Mid-Michigan Equipment and Pace Trailer Sales.

Talbert also hired Laura Roan as an area sales manager for the Southeast territory, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. She has worked for Truck Bodies & Equipment International, Morgan Corp. and Dorsey Trailer Co.

John Deere to Use EGR Technology

John Deere will use cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) engines in its construction equipment to meet the 2011 Interim Tier IV/Stage III B emissions regulations mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency and the European Union for diesel engines 174 hp and above. Exhaust filters will consist of a diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter.

MRTF Holds Turf & Ornamental Seminar

The Midwest Regional Turf Foundation held a two-day Turf & Ornamental Seminar at the W.H. Daniel Turfgrass Research & Diagnostic Center in West Lafayette, Ind. Presenters included Zac Reicher, Lindsey Purcell, Fred Whitford, Doug Richmond, Rick Latin, Tim Gibb, Cale Bigelow, Joe Becovitz, Mike Mickelbart, Cliff Sadof and Janna Beckerman. Topics included an herbicide update, pruning trees, selecting and timing insecticides, fungicides, perimeter pest control, seed, fertilizer issues, state chemist news, ornamental insect pests and more.

UMN, MTGF Hold Field Day

The University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Turf & Grounds Foundation sponsored the 2009 Turf & Grounds Field Day, held at UMN’s St. Paul campus. The Turf Track included presentations on fine fescue cultivar evaluations, turfgrass breeding programs, prairie junegrass germplasm evaluation, fine fescue and bentgrass NTEP fairway trials, low-input golf greens, velvet bentgrass establishment, stem and crown rust in perennial ryegrass, and plant disease diagnostics. The Grounds Track included a nursery tour and emerald ash borer treatment option demonstrations from Bayer CropScience, JRK Seed and Rainbow Treecare Scientific Advancements.

Aquascape constructed a self-sustaining pondless waterfall at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago

Aquascape Builds Pondless Waterfall for Shedd Aquarium

Aquascape, Inc. was commissioned by the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Ill., to construct a 3,000-gallon pondless waterfall adjacent to its outside dining terrace. The 80-foot waterfall and stream feature replicates a watershed and can be replenished with rainwater that runs off the terrace into a series of 50-gallon rain barrels.

Echo Acquires KPI

Echo, Inc., Lake Zurich, Ill., has acquired Kwik Products, Inc., which has manufactured trimmer heads and line for 12 years. KPI will continue to operate out of Phoenix, Ariz., as an independent company led by current president, Fernando Iacona.
